O'Neil was in high school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. She was able to advance into the top 100 rounds since the judges were impressed at her singing performance. O'Neil was praised highly by her judges. She suffered significant losses in the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed to the bottom three or second-bottom two places, respectively. Judges were amazed by her performance, and recommended viewers to select singers who were well-known like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were so good that she was never in the third place again. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil beat Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and the youngest winner in time of the show. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
